Meet the Ar 231, which seemed like a good idea at the time. It was a tiny single seat folding floatplane intended to be carried on submarines. Subs are not noted for interior space so it was designed to fit into a tube 2m wide. Like this in fact.

Its designers were not wedded to the idea of symmetry and so allowed themselves this odd looking wing which made folding easier.

In the event it turned out to be a flop.

Great concept, but it kind of helps to follow some basic laws about planes...

The Japanese actually achieved functional versions of this just before we pressured the home islands and dropped the bombs. It was basically ready to go and fully tested. The big plan was to attack the Panama Canal with them.

Something like this would be great for a private pilot who would rather keep his plane in a trailer at home than pay hangar fees. I think that’s why people are so interested in the Icon A5
